Tamworth is renowned as Australia's Country Music Capital-home to the Big Golden Guitar and the iconic Tamworth Country Music Festival. But beyond the melodies, did you know it also hosts the Taste Tamworth Festival? This 10-day celebration showcases the region's finest food, wine, and produce, reflecting its rich agricultural heritage and growing culinary scene.

The festival has grown each year, thanks to the area's access to fresh, locally sourced, award-winning produce, innovative businesses, multicultural influences, and a flourishing food culture.

This year, Mike and I were invited to experience, and taste, some of the best the region has to offer. From wholesome breakfasts and baked goods to flavour-packed Southeast Asian dishes (served with a side of still life painting!), a generous Greek feast, great coffee, and even a taste of the award-winning Wagyu, crowned the World’s Best Steak last year.

Here are a few of our highlights from this year's event. A big thank you to Tamworth Region for having us!

Le Pruneau Organic Markets & Café
Our day began with a nourishing breakfast at Le Pruneau, a charming French-inspired café located at 83 Bridge Street, Tamworth. Beyond their delicious and nourishing menu, they host a small Saturday market offering fresh, local, and organic produce, house-made small goods, and stunning homemade cakes. Their commitment to quality and community is truly evident.

Miss Ju Ju
For a taste of Southeast Asia, Miss Ju Ju is the place. Their freshly handmade dishes, especially the crispy fried rice paper rolls and the aromatic ginger broth with chewy handmade noodles, were a delight. It's a must-visit spot for those craving authentic flavours.

A Greek Feast at The Tudor Hotel
As part of the festival, The Tudor Hotel hosted a Greek Bottomless Brunch that transported us straight to the Mediterranean. With live DJ music setting the mood, we indulged in a generous spread of chargrilled meats, fresh salads, and golden potatoes.

Camp Grounds Coffee Shop
Coffee enthusiasts, Camp Grounds Coffee will be your go to. We had coffee there 4 times in our 3 day stay.

Fermentation Workshop with Gal's Kitchen Culture
Diving into the world of fermentation with Gal's Kitchen Culture was both educational and fun. The hands-on workshop provided insights into the science behind fermentation, and I've already started experimenting at home with two batches of sauerkraut!

Sweet Street
The festival's 'Sweet Street' was a paradise for those with a sweet tooth. Local stallholders showcased an array of treats, from filled doughnuts and raspberry lemonade to cupcakes and homemade baked goods.

Deva Coffee & Chocolate
A visit to Deva Coffee & Chocolate at 192 Brisbane Street introduced us to their organic raw chocolates, crafted with local raw honey. We picked up a few goodies to take home, sour cherry and macadamia chocolate bars, as well as some chocolate-covered Medjool dates. They also serve superb coffee and house-baked pastries in their quaint and picturesque spot.

Dinner & Views
We wrapped up our Tamworth adventure with panoramic views from Oxley Scenic Lookout. Located at the top of White Street, it's easily accessible and offers breathtaking vistas of the city and Peel River Valley. As the sun set, we headed to The Workshop Kitchen at The Powerhouse Hotel. Their Wagyu beef, sourced from local producer Jack's Creek and crowned the "World's Best Steak" at the 2023 World's Steak Challenge, was absolutely fantastic and a testament to the region's exceptional produce.

There were a few events we wished we could have attended, such as the Farm-to-Table Degustation Dinner, Taste in the Park, and the Tamworth Community Markets. These events highlight the community's dedication to showcasing local produce and culinary talent. Next time, for sure.
